I-90 Reconstruction and Widening - Work Nears Completion
The Illinois Tollway's work to rebuild and widen I-90 from Elgin to the Kennedy Expressway, which began in 2014, is nearly complete.  Construction of the mainline lanes, widened to four per direction, is done.  Some work on noise wall, several interchange ramps, roadside restoration, and landscaping remain.  The changes added a travel lane in each direction and reconstructed the old pavement.  The Illinois Tollway's website (www.illinoistollway.com) is a reference for information on I-90 and other Tollway projects.

A number of crossroad bridges over I-90 were repaired or replaced during the mainline construction.  Within or near Village limits, bridges on Bartlett Road, Higgins Road, Barrington Road, and Roselle Road were replaced.  The bridge deck on Beverly Road was patched.  The Illinois Tollway expects the Barrington Road full interchange project to be complete by fall 2017.  While the bridge work on Barrington Road is essentially complete, other work remains to reconstruct new pavement north and south of the bridge, install roadway lighting and directional signs, plus completing the path and sidewalk connections.  More information about the interchange and related transit improvement's can be found on the Barrington Road interchange page.  The following gives the current status of local roads affected by the Tollway work.

--  Barrington Road
Northbound Barrington Road traffic is on new pavement on the east side of the bridge.  Southbound traffic is on the west side.  An active work zone area is located in the center of the roadway between generally Hassell Road and Central Road.  Widening for new pavement will occur on Barrington Road south of the bridge.  Please continue to use caution while traveling across the bridge and through the work area.

--  Greenspoint Parkway
As part of the related Barrington Road Interchange project, a portion of Greenspoint Parkway is being reconfigured to meet the needs of the new eastbound exit ramp as well as to accommodate significant utility work.  Greenspoint is reduced to one lane south / eastbound through the curve in the northeast part of the business park, with no westbound traffic allowed in this section.  Estimated completion of the work by the Tollway is mid 2017.

--  Roselle Road 
The Roselle Road Bridge is now complete but watch for lane closures due to construction of permanent traffic signals and lighting.   The new eastbound exit is open along with the ramps on the east side of Roselle Road.  A separate but related project will make changes to Central Road for a new westbound entrance ramp from the Roselle Road corridor to I-90.  Cook County, the Illinois Tollway, and the Village of Schaumburg are working on the plans for the new entrance ramp which is projected for construction in 2017. 

Please continue to use caution while traveling in the construction zones.  Temporary lane closures will be posted throughout the project and drivers should anticipate minor traffic delays.

I-90 CORRIDOR SMART ROAD TECHNOLOGY
Tollway staff is working on the implementation of Smart Road technology in the I-90 corridor.  Over the lane gantries are spaced every half mile from Barrington Road to the Tri-State / Kennedy Expressway.  This equipment consists of roadway sensors and overhead changeable message signs to control lane use and notify motorists of road or traffic conditions.  Testing of the equipment and software will continue through the spring or summer of 2017.  Ultimately, information on travel times, roadway conditions, weather, construction, incidents, etc. can be communicated to motorists via the overhead signs.  Each lane has a display panel above it which will be used to indicate whether the lane is open, closed, or if a merge or lane change is needed ahead.  Additional electronic displays will provide trip times and other travel information.  Displays positioned over the left shoulder on I-90 will identify when Pace buses are permitted to drive on the shoulder to avoid congestion.  The system is expected to be fully operational in mid-2017 in preparation for Pace's new I-90 service startup in the fall.

EASTERN SEGMENT REBUILDING AND WIDENING
Reconstruction of the eastern segment of I-90 completed the Illinois Tollway's $2.5 billion I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project.  As part of the project, the eastern segment of I-90 a fourth lane was added in each direction between Randall Road and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). 

The shoulders and inside lanes in both directions on I-90 were widened to accommodate Pace bus on shoulder service and future transit opportunities. The project will integrate transit into the corridor today, as well as accommodate future transit expansion plans. A new Park & Ride is open at Randall Road, and similar facilities will be constructed by Pace at Illinois Route 25 and Barrington Road in 2017.
